You pay credits to see contacts. Credits to export them. Credits to enrich them. And when someone changes jobs? Credits again to see the update. That's not a data tool — that's a credit burn machine.
Apollo advertises starting at $59/month. Here's the reality behind the marketing.
These aren't our opinions. They're documented complaints from real users across Trustpilot, Capterra, G2, Reddit, and Software Advice.
Apollo's "unlimited email credits" only apply within their platform. The moment you want to export contacts to a CSV, your CRM, or any tool outside Apollo — you need separate export credits. The Basic plan ($59/month) gives you just 10 export credits on the free tier, and even paid plans cap exports strictly. You're paying for access to a database you can't actually take the data out of.
As of late 2025, Apollo forces "waterfall enrichment" on all accounts — querying multiple data sources sequentially. Even accessing a simple email now costs 3-10 credits per contact because of this forced enrichment. There's no way to disable it. Users on Capterra report: "Paid plans now give only ~2,500 credits, and even email-only access costs 3-10 credits per contact due to forced waterfall and unlock systems."
When a contact changes jobs or their email updates, Apollo charges you fresh credits to see the new information. You already paid to access this contact. The database update is Apollo's responsibility — but they've turned routine data maintenance into a recurring revenue stream charged directly to you. A dedicated data provider verifies and delivers current data from the start.
Apollo has no function that prevents you from downloading the same contact multiple times. There's no "previously downloaded" filter. Multiple Trustpilot reviewers flag this: "It's highly likely that you will be paying for the same download over and over again because you cannot filter previously downloaded contacts at download." Credits gone. No refund.
Users report credits being deducted during enrichment with zero results returned — and no way to trace where the credits went. One Trustpilot reviewer attempting to build a business case for wider adoption wrote: "Credits have clearly been consumed, but cannot be reconciled or investigated. Support told me there are no backend logs and the issue cannot be escalated."
A single mobile number costs 8 credits in Apollo — 8x the cost of an email. At that rate, 312 phone numbers would exhaust your entire monthly credit allowance on the Basic plan. And reviewers consistently report these numbers are inaccurate: disconnected, outdated, or wrong person entirely. You're paying a premium for data that doesn't connect you to anyone.
Apollo advertises 91% email accuracy. Independent testing and aggregated user reviews tell a different story: 65-70% real-world accuracy. Users on Reddit report exporting 2,000 "verified" contacts and hitting 18% hard bounces on day one. That's not a data quality issue — that's a domain reputation killer. And the credits you spent on those bounced contacts? Non-refundable.
In 2018, Apollo left a database with over 126 million records exposed online without a password. The breach was discovered by a security researcher and reported to HaveIBeenPwned. In 2021, 11 million French user records were stolen and put for sale on a hacking forum. If you're trusting a platform with your prospect data and your own contact information, these incidents matter.
Apollo's subscription fee is the entry ticket. The real cost is driven by credit overages ($0.20 each, $50 minimum purchase), per-seat pricing that multiplies with each rep, and credits that expire every billing cycle with no rollover. Agency users on Reddit call Apollo "way less agency-friendly" after recent pricing changes. A 10-person team on Professional can easily spend $110K-$130K/year — not the $9,480 the sticker price suggests.
